Dr. El-Wazir has been teaching physiology to medical students for about 30 years, and to graduate students for about 20 years. I also taught physiology courses to dental, pharmacy, nursing and medical technology students. I was selected as the best professor in Egypt in 2000, and was elected by the Saudi medical students in 2004 as the best teacher of the year.
Dr. El-Wazir has participated as main/co-organizer in more than 30 medical education workshops in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Sudan, and Syria. Main topics are curriculum development, problem-based learning, and student assessment. I was awarded a FAIMER fellowship in medical education in 2011 (Philadelphia, USA).
Dr. El-Wazir has developed the research lab of the physiology department in the Suez Canal University through an extramural grant of about 500,000 Egyptian pound. This allowed the department members to conduct and publish research in the areas of cardiovascular and basic electrophysiology. I’m now the PI of a large scale capacity building research project (sum of 8 million Egyptian pounds) to establish a central up-to-date research lab for my institute which will include a molecular biology lab, a tissue culture lab and imaging facilities.
Dr. El-Wazir has worked as an external examiner for a large number of Master and PhD theses in medical physiology, medical education, clinical pharmacology, and cardiology. The theses are mostly in Egypt (about 10 different universities), Saudi Arabia, and South Africa.
Dr. El-Wazir has served as an invited speaker in a number of meetings of the ESPS, Egyptian Society of Cardiology, Egyptian Society of Psychiatry, SONA (Society of Neuroscientists of Africa), and Aseer club of Cardiology in Saudi Arabia.Dr.. El-Wazir has organized several scientific meetings, among which are the 6th international congress of the AAPS (African Association of Physiological Sciences) and the annual meetings of the ESPS (Egyptian Society of Physiological Sciences). I’m currently serving as the Vice-Chair of the ESPS and the secretary general of the AAPS. I’m also a member of the education committee of the IUPS.
Dr. El-Wazir is a member of the Egyptian national committee responsible for evaluating the scientific applications of promotion to associate and full professorship. I also worked as an external examiner for similar applications in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Dr.. El-Wazir is serving as a member of the editorial board of several scientific journals, namely the JAAPS (Journal of the African Association of Physiological Sciences and Bulletin of the Egyptian Society of Physiological Sciences. I reviewed for a number of scientific journals inside and outside Egypt, among which are: Frontiers in Integrative Physiology, Clinical and Experimental Toxicology, Brain Research Bulletin, Renal Failure, Cytotechnology, Experimental Gerontology. I’m also a regular reviewer for funding proposals submitted to the STDF which is the main national research supporter in Egypt. I have supervised/co-supervised more than 30 master and PhD theses of Physiology, anatomy, histology, pathology, clinical pathology, cardiology, anaesthesiology and urology.
