Biography

Dr. Petra Obioma Nnamani is currently Humboltian at HIPS, Saarland University, Germany, and also Senior lecturer (HEAD) at the Department of Pharmaceutics, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). She obtained her B.Pharm in 2001 and M.Pharm in 2004 both from UNN. During her Ph.D 2006-2010, Petra joined the nanotechnology group at ICS-UNIDO in Trieste, Italy (2009) for Early Research Training in Nanotechnology. She obtained her PhD in Drug Delivery in 2010 from UNN. She was awarded CV Raman International Fellowship for African Researchers at the Department of Physics, Shivaji University, Kolhapur, India in 2012. Following a competitive application process, in 2012 she was awarded the TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme to Helmholtz-Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland, Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany in 2013.

Petra is a Member of the New York Academy of Sciences, Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) and Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria. She is co-author of over 60 original papers and reviewer for a number of top journals. She has attended well over 30 international conferences with over 32 contributions. She is recipient of several awards: TechWomen USA (2017); Stars in Global Health Round 4 Phase 1 Award (Ref. 0251-01) by the Grand Challenges Canada on “using Moringa oleifera as a low-cost point-of-use (POU) treatment of drinking water in South East Nigeria. This recent innovation was patented in Nigeria, as the second patent registered by Petra. She has other on-going grant works funded by TETFund Nigeria. For TechWome 2017, she was 1 out of 5 selected among 1700 Nigerian Women applicants from a global pool of 4000 women in STEM from Asia, Middle East and Africa; hence an alumnus of TechWomen USA in 2017.

The research lines of Petra are focused on development and characterization of biocompatible and biodegradable systems for drug delivery (antimalarial and antibiotics etc) involving micro and nanoparticle systems as well as macro-systems (polymeric films) for buccal mucosa and wound healing applications. As co-coordinator of Public Health & Environmental Sustainability (PHES) Research Group, translational researches from lab-to-bed side in curing diseases such as ulcer, inflammation, infection...etc, are of interest.
