Dr. Gita Ramjee is currently working as Director and Chief Specialist Scientist at South African Medical Research Council, HIV Prevention Research Unit, South Africa. She has completed her Ph.D. in Kidney Diseases in Childhood from University of Natal, South Africa. Her main area of interest focuses on Biomedical Sciences. Her area of expertise includes HIV/TB prevention and treatment, HIV infection, Microbicides, Treatment and care, Women, Clinical trials. She has published 151 research articles in journals contributed as author/co-author. Dr. Ramjee’s research in HIV prevention was awarded one of the largest grants ever made by the National Institutes of Health for research conducted outside of the United States. As the Director of the HIV Prevention Research Unit, Dr Ramjee built the units scientific staff from 22 to 350, and helped it gain an international reputation. Dr Ramjee’s commitment to HIV prevention research and attention to high-quality data and ethical research was instrumental in gaining the Unit substantial international donor and sponsor support. In 2012, Dr Ramjee received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the international Microbicide Conference for her major contribution over two decades to global scientific knowledge in the field of HIV prevention.
