Dr. Mark Deakin is currently working as Professor of Built Environment at Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland. He has completed his Ph.D. in Sustainable Urban Development from same University. Previously he served as Research Associate at Heriot-Watt University, Estates Surveyor at Strathclyde Regional Council, Property Manager at Edinburgh City Council, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader, and Professor Level 1 at Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland. As Professor of the Built Environment Dr. Mark works alongside academics from prominent World Class Universities in the UK and equivalent ranking Research Institutes across Europe. His collaboration with industrial and governmental bodies includes: Nokia, Microsoft, Eclipse Consultants, Mazares, WSPG, CSTB France, VTT Finland, BRE UK, the European Commission’s IPTS, Seville and the UK’s Department of Communities and Local Government. More recently, Dr. Mark has been engaged on a Smart and Sustainable Cities study funded by the European Investment Bank. Over the past 15 years, Dr. Mark has either jointly-led, or been the principal investigator of the many research projects and technical development projects. Since 2007 Dr. Mark has been in the unique position of holding 2 National Research Council grants awarded by the ESRC and EPSRC for LfWWs and SURegen respectively and in 2008 was awarded 2 EC INTERREG contracts, known as SmartCities and CLUE (Climate Neutral Urban Environments). Dr. Mark’s current research focuses on the Potential of Mass Retrofit Programmes within the Residential Property Sector to deliver on the UK’s 2007 Climate Change targets. Dr. Mark has also contributed towards the Research, Scientific and Technical Development agenda for Framework 7 of the EC’s Environment and Climate programme. He is currently Director of the SCRAN (SmartCities (inter) Regional Academic Network) and works with counterparts in the Universities of Amsterdam and Turin to exploit the research and technology transfer potential of this organization. The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) have also invited Dr. Mark to present the findings of the LfWWs research project to Government Ministers, policy makers and civil servants at a National Sustainable Communities Development Conference, organized by the ESRC and held in London on 1st June, 2009. He has published 73 research articles in journals, 39 book chapters and 12 books contributed as author/co-author. He is also serving as editor and reviewer for number of journals.
