Biography

Joao Gilberto Correa da Silva graduated in Agronomic Engineering from the School of Agronomy Eliseu Maciel (1961). He did postgraduate studies at North Carolina State University, earning the degrees of Master of Statistics (1972) and Ph.D. in Statistics (1975). His doctoral thesis originated a statistical analysis methodology included in two procedures (PROC TSCSREG and PROC PANEL) of the Economic Time Series (ETS) software, a product of the Statistical Analysis System (SAS). He was Assistant Professor (1962-1980), Full Professor (1980-1990) and Associate Professor (1991-2008) at the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPEL), where retired in these last two positions. He was a Researcher at the Southern Agricultural Research and Experimentation Institute (IPEAS) (1962-1972) and at the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA) (1976-1982), where he was Head of the Department of Statistics and Economic Analysis, and Head of the Department of Quantitative Methods, respectively. He was a Visiting Professor at the University of BrasØlia (1976-1982); President of the Brazilian Region of the International Biometric Society (IBS) in two administrations (1982-1984, 1992-1994); Correspondent of the Biometrics Bulletin of IBS (1976-1984); Scholarship Holder of Research Productivity from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (1991-2009). He was an Associate Editor of the CERES journal; member of editorial boards, scientific consultant and reviewer of several national and international scientific journals; collaborator and consultant of several research institutions and universities. He taught regular courses in Differential and Integral Calculus, Analytical Geometry, Probability, Basic Statistics, Statistical Methods, Scientific Methodology, Experimental Statistics, Linear Models, Mixed Linear Models and Multivariate Analysis. Taught also short and extension courses for undergraduate and graduate students, professors and researchers. He has interest and develops research in scientific methodology and statistical applications in scientific research, particularly in agricultural research, working mainly in the planning and statistical analysis of experiments. In these areas, he has guided more than one hundred students in doctoral theses, master's dissertations and undergraduate monographs at higher education institutions. He was a member of more than sixty boards and commissions examining doctoral theses and master's dissertations. Participated and presented communications, lectures and conferences at around 120 congresses and scientific meetings, published 181 complete and summarized articles in scientific journals and conference proceedings, and 25 books, book chapters and didactic texts. In 2019, he was awarded the University Merit Distinction from the Federal University of Pelotas.
