Dr. Rabbani is the founding Chairperson of the Department of Biomedical Physics & Technology at the University of Dhaka (2008-2015) where he supervises 15 PhD/MPhil students and Research Fellows. Earlier he taught at the Department of Physics of the same University since 1978. A Professor since 1988, he has published more than 80 scientific papers, one text book, and has written chapters in 5 books besides supervising more than 90 research students at M.S., M.Phil and Ph.D. levels. He has given about 100 invited lectures at home and abroad and works in several areas like Biomedical Physics, Engineering & Technology, low cost electronic instrumentation and Solar Energy. His vision is target oriented research, particularly focusing on the needs of the common people in Bangladesh and in other low resource countries and this has led to a few innovations that have been acclaimed internationally. Some of his medical devices are being used within Bangladesh and also beyond its borders. He has a philosophy of not patenting his inventions, rather he would make these open once matured through trial manufacture and marketing. Professor Rabbani is an active member of the Health Technology Task Group of the International Union of Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine (HTTG-IUPESM), is the current President of Bangladesh Medical Physics Association (BMPA), and the Founding President of Relevant Science & Technology Society, Bangladesh (RSTS,B) under which he has recently founded a ‘Centre for Technology Equalisation (CTE)’ with a global vision. To take the technology based products developed by their group to the doorsteps of the common people Dr. Rabbani, together with his students, founded BiBEAT Ltd, a ‘Company limited by Guarantee’, where there are no shareholders and nobody takes the profit. The main aim of his activity is to bridge the global technology gap, through which he feels, the global disparity in quality of life and in economy can be alleviated to a great extent.
