Biography

Dr. B.J.C.Perera qualified with MBBS(Cey) 2nd Class Honours in 1970 and obtained DCH(Cey), DCH(Eng), MRCP(UK), MD(Paediatrics), FRCP(Edin), FRCP(Lond), FRCPCH(UK), FSLCPaed, FCCP and FCGP(SL). He had his overseas training in the United Kingdom and headed a paediatric unit at The Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, Sri Lanka. He retired from Government Service in 2007 and is presently in Consultative Practice in the Private Sector. He was the first President of the Sri Lanka College of Paediatricians, Founder President of the Respiratory Disease Study Group of Sri Lanka, Founder President of the Childhood Respiratory Study Circle of Sri Lanka, National Consultant, Programme for control of Acute Respiratory Infections of the Ministry of Health, Chairman Board of Study in Paediatrics of The Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, Founder Member of The Board of Study in Sports Medicine of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine and Member of the Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) of the Global Fund to fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM). He is presently Joint Editor of The Sri Lanka Journal of Child Health, Joint Editor of The Proceedings of the Sri Lanka College of Paediatricians Annual Scientific Congress, Editor-in-Chief of Sri Lanka Journal of Bio-Medical Informatics, Member - International Advisory Board of Current Paediatrics, Reviewer - Sri Lanka Journal of Medicine, Member - International Review Board, Archives of Disease in Childhood and Member International Reviewers Panel of Medical Science Monitor. His research interests are childhood asthma, respiratory infections, breast-feeding and paediatric HIV disease. He has participated in Scientific Congresses of many countries and has delivered many guest lectures here and abroad. He has delivered seven orations, over 70 oral platform presentations and is the author of over 80 scientific publications. He has been an Editor, Chapter Author or Joint Author of seven books. He has won several prizes for the best paper of the congress and he was conferred the Research Bonus Award of the President of Sri Lanka in 1999. He was awarded the Outstanding Paediatrician of Asia Award by the Asia Pacific Paediatric Association in 2007 and the National Research Council of Sri Lanka Merit Award for Scientific Research in 2012 . He has been an examiner for the undergraduates of the Universities of Colombo and Peradeniya, postgraduates of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine of the University of Colombo and external examiner for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan. Currently he is the Immediate Past President of the Sri Lanka Medical Association, the 126 year old apex medical academic institution of Sri Lanka. He is a well known tennis player and cricketer in Sri Lanka.
