Born in Cordoba, Argentina, I graduated from The National University of Cordoba School of Medicine and continued my postgraduate training at The Ohio State University. A board certified anesthesiologist specialized in neuroanesthesia, I also received training in general surgery and completed a fellowship in cellular immunology. In addition, I completed training and received a certificate in business administration with a focus on business administration in anesthesia. I hold the position of professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Neurological Surgery at The Ohio State University. Since 2007, I was appointed director of neuroanesthesia. Being the leader in neurosurgical anesthesiology, I actively pursued the plan to organize a clinical fellowship program within the department. With my commitment and dedication, the program was founded. Since its opening in 2007, many outstanding anesthesiologists received their specialized training in neurosurgical anesthesiology at The Ohio State University. I have participated in numerous national and international meetings as an invited lecturer, spokesman, moderator, chairman and an honored guest. Since my promotion to work as a professor, I have had over 100 international presentations, lectures, and grand rounds. I have been an invited speaker at neurosurgery meetings for my team approach to care for the neurosurgical patient, as well as others in the surgical arena. In appreciation of my professional accomplishments I have been invited to participate in development of 3 national guidelines as a peer-selected member. I have contributed significantly to development of national guidelines to manage postoperative nausea and vomiting, stroke, and cognitive disorders. I began my research career early on in the Department of Surgery, Division of Transplantation at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Since the beginning of my career path, I have not only showed interest for the clinical aspects of the medical field but also for the research field. I firmly believe that research is the key to improving medicine and, ultimately, improving the lives of patients. I have founded one of the largest clinical anesthesia research teams nationwide in the Department of Anesthesiology consisting of research fellows, clinical residents, post-doctoral researchers, medical students, clinical coordinators, a research scientist, and research assistants. During all these years, I have led the research team to new achievements including multiple collaborations, research grants, presentations and peer-reviewed publications and, last but not least, substantial increase in extramural research funding. The anesthesia research team has successfully performed over 17 studies including both internal and external collaborations. Under my leadership, the anesthesia research team has successfully conducted over 150 clinical trials, including sponsored and investigator initiated studies. Among the areas of interest are postoperative pain, postoperative nausea and vomiting, postoperative delirium, and patient monitoring devices. These clinical studies have allowed myself and my team to publish multiple abstracts and peer-reviewed manuscripts in national and international high-impact journals including Anesthesiology, Anesthesia and Analgesia, Neurosurgical Clinics of North America, and many others. Many of the published works have been presented at national and international anesthesiology and neurological surgery meetings. My grant proposals have received extramural funding in the amount of nearly three million dollars for research purposes. I also hold several committee appointments at the local and national levels, such as The American Society of Anesthesiology, The Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia, and am also a member of the Association of University Anesthesiologists (AUA).
