Biography

Prof. Filippo Berto is currently working as Professor of Machine Design at Department of Management and Engineering, Stradella San Nicola, University of Padua, Italy. He has completed his PhD in Design Machine from the University of Firenze, Italy. He also appointed as Researcher and Assistant Professor at University of Padua, Italy. Since 2006 he teaches Machine Design and Advanced Machine Design at the Bachelor and Master degree in Mechatronic Engineering and advanced Mechanical design and Fracture and Damage Mechanics (Mechanics of Materials and Solid Mechanics) at the Master in Mechanical Engineering. Actually he is Vice-President of the master degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is also in the scientific committee of the department of Management and Engineering. He is editor for Fatigue and Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures and member of editorial board in Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Physical Mesomechanics, Materials Science Engineering A and other international journals. He is author of more than 260 technical papers (journals and conferences), mainly oriented to the Brittle Failure of different Materials, Notch effect, the application of the Finite element method to the Structural Analysis, the Mechanical Behavior of Metallic Materials, the Fatigue performance of notched components as well as the Reliability of Welded, Bolted and Bonded Joints. Since 2003, he has been working on different aspects of the Structural Integrity discipline, by mainly focusing attention on problems related to the static and fatigue assessment of Engineering materials and components. In particular, he has attempted to devise engineering methods suitable for designing components (experiencing different kinds of stress concentration phenomena) against fatigue as well as against static failures. According to his modus operandi, he has performed both theoretical and experimental investigations and all the design methods he has formalized so far have always been validated through a systematic experimental work. He is also serving as reviewer for 55 journals. He received the Elsevier Reviewer Award 2013 for his outstanding contribution as reviewer for Elsevier Journals. In 2013 he has completed 45 reviews for Elsevier journals and in 2014 he has completed 51 reviews. In 2014 he received the Elsevier Reviewer Award 2014 for his outstanding contribution as reviewer for Materials and Design. He also served as Visiting Professor at Hangzhou University (China), Adelaide University (Australia), and Ritsumei University (Kyoto, Japan). He has supervised more than 10 PhD students 40 MSc and 100 bachelor students. His area of expertise includes Fracture and Notch Mechanics, Fatigue of Unnotched and Notched Components, Welded and Bonded Joints, Bolted Joints, Hot-Dip Galvanized Steels, Non Destructive methods For Detecting Cracks or Defects, Analytical and Numerical Models for Multiscale Modeling.
