Biography
Prof. Elango Ayyasamy is basically a veterinarian and specialised in Dairy Microbiology with major emphasis on probiotic dairy products, functional dairy products, foodborne pathogens and food safety. He is currently working as the Dean of a Veterinary College and Research Institute, a constituent unit of the renowned Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), located in the district of Salem in the Tamil Nadu state of India. He has over 25 years of extensive professional experience in various capacities. He has so far handled 10 externally funded research projects with a cumulative budget outlay of Rs. 6.16 crore including Rashtriya Kishan Vikas Yojana (National Agriculture Development Programme) funded scheme entitled "Value added dairy food manufacturing unit to maximise the returns from dairying” with a budget outlays of Rs.117 lakhs, ICAR sponsored Experiential Learning scheme on "Model demonstration unit for processing of milk" with a financial outlay of Rs. 99 lakhs and ICAR-National Agricultural Innovation project titled "A Milk Value Chain for the unorganised sector" (Total budget: Rs.257.09 lakhs). His area of focus in research has been on development of various value added functional dairy milk products including dietetic products like low fat ice cream, probiotic ice cream, probiotic yoghurt, carotene enriched milk, herbal dairy foods like Aloe vera and Noni incorporated flavoured milk and application of micro encapsulation techniques in stabilizing probiotics and incorporation in dairy products so as to achieve targeted delivery. He has so far guided 16 masters, 5 doctoral and 12 P.G.Diploma students. He is a life member of 10 professional societies and has published 124 research papers in national and international Journals of repute, presented 121 conference papers/ abstracts, authored 12 books, 9 book chapters, 35 popular articles and 22 practical manuals. He has involved in organizing 10 national and 5 international conferences / workshops. He has been bestowed with 34 awards and medals for his outstanding performance in academics, research and extension including Dr.Verghese Kurien Medal for the best research scholar in Dairy Microbiology, best teacher of TANUVAS and distinguished fellow of the renowned Indian Dairy Association.
