Dr. Augusto E. Serrano is currently working as Professor at the Institute of Aquaculture, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, Philippines. He is also serving as Director of the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of the U.P. Visayas (from 2015). He completed his PhD in 1991 from the Tokyo University of Fisheries in Food Science and Technology major in Enzymology. He was the first Filipino Postdoctorate awardee of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and was assigned at Kochi University, Japan. His area of work includes Enzymology, Fish Nutrition, Fish Nutritional Physiology and Biochemistry and Applied Molecular Sciences. His responsibilities in the past includes the Director of the Graduate Program of the U.P. Visayas (three years), the Director of the Institute of Aquaculture (three years), the Director of Research Coordination (three years), College Secretary (three years) and Director of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (five years). He has been a Fulbright Visiting Professor at the University of Rhode Island, USA, for which he was cited by the Rhode Island State Congress in 2000 for exemplary work. He also served as Visiting Scientist at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology and Kagoshima University, both in Japan and at the Hohenheim University in Germany. He is the recipient of more than 30 awards both local and international. At present, he is the holder of a Regional Professorial Chair Grant given by the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA, 2015-2016). He has led more than 10 research projects and programs and a member of 8 Professional Societies. He has published about 76 articles in International and National Peer reviewed Journals. He has written a chapter “The Basics of Aquaculture Nutrition, Feeds and Feeding Techniques” in the book Coastal Aquaculture in the Philippines (about to be issued this year 2015). He is also serving more than 5 journals as Editor/Reviewer. So far, Dr. Serrano has produced 4 PhD and 10 MSc Scholars. At present, he is supervising a PhD and 4 MSc students, respectively.
