Prof. Umar Farooq
Obtained Ph.D in Microbiology with parasitology specialization from Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh (July 1998- Feb 2003) on the topic entitled “Characterization of polymorphic region of the genes encoding protective antigens of Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum strains prevalent in Northern India”. Dr Farooq awarded with Senior Research Fellowship in 2000 and Research Associateship in 2003 by Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi India. He worked at Deoband Unani Medical College, Deoband, UP as a lecturer of Biology from 1991 to 1994, He also worked as a Research Scholar Dept of Virology 1997, and Dept of Parasitology, PGIMER, Chandigarh in 1998 than as a Research Associate from March 2003 to October 2004. Dr Farooq moved to Ethiopia and worked as an Assistant Professor of Medical Parasitology from 2004 to 2006, at Awassa College of Health Sciences, Debub University Awassa, Ethiopia, sponsored by U.N.D.P. He also worked as an assistant professor, Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, at Omer al Mukhtar University, Libya from 2006-2009 and as a Senior lecturer and Coordinator of Microbial Biotechnology at Dolphin College Fathegrah Sahib, Punjab. He has joined Shoolini University as an associate professor of Microbiology in 2010 and promoted as Professor in December 2015. He bagged Extramural research grant from Indian Council of Medical Research, India on Molecular Characterization of Echinococcus granulosus and immunopathology of Plasmodium falciparum (Sever and complicated malaria). He has published 50 Research papers in National and International journals of scientific repute. He has also filled eight national, one International and One US patents for his discovery of new drugs against gram-negative MDR bacteria and small peptides, which will use as a diagnostic markers as well as sub unit vaccine development of malaria and Echinococcus granulosus. He won best research paper prize at 15th national congress of Parasitology and Silver Medal in Shooting.
His research focus on different areas: Immunpathology of Malaria parasite, Typhid and Leishmania,Echinococcosis, discovery of Biomolecules for antimicorobial activity and synergistic effect of plant based EPI for MDR bacteria, and peptide based Malaria Vaccine.
